Welcome
Fall is coming to Tucson, and, as always, the slower pace of the summer months is giving way to the pleasant bustle that comes with the cooler weather and returning city residents. The sudden increase in our daily pace perhaps reminds us of the challenges that face us as southern Arizona continues to grow. The choices we make now and the plans we implement will be of vital importance in the years and decades to come. As much as this is getting to be a perhaps disturbingly common theme in much talk in the media and at our dinner tables, it behoves us to listen with care and think of what we can contribute toward good sound solutions. With this in mind we will be updating you shortly about our protection efforts on over 4,700 acres of working ranch and farmland in southern Arizona.

The Trust is currently involved in the following projects. As always, we welcome your support:

  • Launching The Family Ranchland Protection Fund, a fund that leverages the skills and experience of a diverse team of qualified professionals to assist landowners who wish to protect their farms and ranches
  • Working on the Pinal Open Space and Trails Master Plan, and participating in the Pinal Partnership
  • Landowner outreach and land protection in Pima, Cochise and Santa Cruz counties
  • Supporting conservation policy to protect the West Branch of the Santa Cruz River

Please visit our newly designed web site for updates, including information on priority conservation efforts throughout southern Arizona, and permanent land protection achieved with Pima County's 2004 Open Space Bond funds. Again, the Trust's progress has been invigorating, and with partners like you, we can and will continue this work. Stay tuned.

Your partner in conservation,

Diana Freshwater
Executive Director

The Trust welcomes britt simmons to our board
In May 2006 the Trust welcomed our newest addition to the Board of Directors, Britt Simmons.  Britt brings his extensive knowledge of complicated estate tax planning to the Trust.  A partner in the firm Regier Carr & Monroe, L.L.P., Britt has over 20 years of certified public accounting experience.

He concentrates on services for estates, trusts and closely held companies.  Britt also serves as Partner in Charge of the Tucson office.  His research and planning skills have resulted in tax savings for individuals, estates, not-for-profit organizations and a variety of businesses.  We are privileged to have him join our Board of Directors!

The Trust joins stakeholder taskforce for Pinal County’s Open Space and Trials Master Plan
The Arizona Open Land Trust has been invited to join the Pinal County stakeholder taskforce for the creation of an Open Space and Trails Master Plan for the county.  The stakeholder taskforce will assist county planners and the Planning and Development Department to prepare a map and master plan that will ultimately serve as a Comprehensive Plan amendment to include an Open Space and Recreation Element.  The Trust is participating in the stakeholder taskforce by providing data compiled as part of our Southern Arizona Habitat Conservation Priorities project map. New Federal Law Gives Fairer Tax Benefit for Voluntary Conservation Agreements

Generous landowners who donate voluntary conservation agreements, also known as conservation easements, to the Arizona Open Land Trust are inspired by many things: they love the open spaces of southern Arizona, they marvel at the diversity of wildlife, they feel a connection to their land, and they wish to leave a legacy for future generations.  This inspiration is at the heart of the Trust’s work to permanently protect southern Arizona’s vanishing western landscapes and wildlife habitat.  But for almost all of our donors, donating a conservation easement is a major financial decision, and the federal income tax deduction that comes with a donation helps make easements possible for landowners in our community.
